MERCY

Mercy is a blessing regarded as an act of divine favor or compassion; in the Qur'an Mercy has the general meaning of LOVE.

MY MERCY (LOVE) ENCOMPASSES EVERYTHING

… That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who do right, and practise regular charity, and those who believe in Our signs;- (7/156)
… Your Lord hath inscribed for Himself (the rule of) mercy: …(6/54)

Mercy is the fundamental characteristic of the Divine Being. All individuals who have incurred God's wrath after having undergone the ordeal awaiting them will be pardoned and embraced by God's infinite love and mercy.

SOURCE OF LOVE

… But ask forgiveness of your Lord, and turn unto Him (in repentance): For my Lord is indeed full of mercy and loving-kindness." (11/90)
…. Most Gracious, Most Merciful; (1/3)

Rahman and Rahim both deived from rahmat signify both tenderness requiring the exercise of beneficence, and thus comprising the ideas of love and mercy. The former indicates the greatest preponderance of the quality of mercy and the latter is expressive of a constant repetition and manifestation of the attribute. The Prophet is reported to have said: “Al-Rahman is the Beneficent God Whose love and mercy are manifested in the creation of this world, and al-Rahim is the Merciful God whose love and mercy are manifested in the state that comes after”. Thus the former is expressive of the utmost degree of love and generosity, the latter of unbounded and constant favor and mercy. Rahman is the adjective mentioned in the Qur'an almost as many times as Rab (the Lord). The fundamental mystery of creation is covered in the name Rahman, an epithet solely used for God. The significance of the word Rahim covers only the believers, God having given the privilege of priority to men. There should surely be a difference between Nimrod or Abu Lahab and Moses or Muhammad. Rahim brings in in a sense o kind of justice to the cause. Vedud, (the All-loving God) is another of the beautiful names of God.

THE CREATION IS THE OUTCOME OF DIVINE LOVE

He is the One that sends down rain (even) after (men) have given up all hope, and scatters His Mercy (far and wide)… (42/28)
It is out of His Mercy that He has made for you Night and Day,- that ye may rest therein, and that ye may seek of his Grace;- and in order that ye may be grateful. (28/73)

God who has created the universe which is in continual process of becoming takes pleasure in contemplating His Glory and Magnificence. The rain and the alternation of day and night are but a manifestation of His love for his servants.

DESPAIR NOT OF GOD'S MERCY

O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah. for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (3/53)
So say: "O my Lord! grant Thou forgiveness and mercy for Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!" (23/118)
