ARROGANTS

Arrogance is a genuine or assumed feeling of superiority that shows itself in an overbearing manner or attitude or in excessive claims of position, dignity, or power or that unduly exalts one's own worth or importance. The antonym is modesty which is a laudable quality. Among the arrogants, Satan is foremost mentioned. Pride had caused its fall. The extreme states of arrogance are denial and belying of God's verses, refusal to resign to God's will. The megalomania leads one's downfall.

GOD ABHORS THE ARROGANTS

Undoubtedly Allah doth know what they conceal, and what they reveal: verily He loveth not the arrogant. (16/23) … Indeed they have an arrogant conceit of themselves, and mighty is the insolence of their impiety! (25/21) … but today shall ye be recompensed with a Penalty of humiliation: for that ye were arrogant on earth without just cause, and that ye (ever) transgressed (46/20) Doubtless God is displeased with people who think highly of themselves, the boasters, the braggarts doomed to be lowered.

SHOWING OFF

Nor walk on the earth with insolence: for thou canst not rend the earth asunder, nor reach the mountains in height. (17/37) And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loveth not any arrogant boaster. (31-18) The entire creation is a blend of God's infinite number of names. The mystery of creation lies with God and does not become a man to question it. Condescending and looking down on people ill fit the behavior of a mature being.

THE FIRST REBEL

And behold, We said to the angels: "Bow down to Adam" and they bowed down. Not so Iblis: he refused and was haughty: He was of those who reject Faith. (2/34)

((Allah)) said: "O Iblis! What prevents thee from prostrating thyself to one whom I have created with my hands? Art thou haughty? Or art thou one of the high (and mighty) ones?" (Iblis) said: "I am better than he: thou createdst me from fire, and him thou createdst from clay." (Allah)) said: "Then get thee out from here: for thou art rejected, accursed. (38/5-77) Satan was expelled from paradise not because he had denied God but because he had proved to be a braggart and a rebel.

PRIDE THAT KEEPS MAN AWAY FROM PRAYING

Christ disdaineth nor to serve and worship Allah, nor do the angels, those nearest (to Allah.: those who disdain His worship and are arrogant,-He will gather them all together unto Himself to (answer). (4/172)

"(The reply will be:) 'Nay, but there came to thee my Signs, and thou didst reject them: thou wast Haughty, and became one of those who reject faith!'" (39-59)

And your Lord says: "Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer): but those who are too arrogant to serve Me will surely find themselves in Hell - in humiliation!" (40/60)

Pride and self-conceit may prevent individuals to submit to God; they may be reluctant to praise him with thanks. Only those believe in Our Signs, who, when they are recited to them, fall down in adoration, and celebrate the praises of their Lord, nor are they (ever) puffed up with pride. (32/15) Everybody will receive his due. Verily We have revealed the Book to thee in Truth, for (instructing) mankind. He, then, that receives guidance benefits his own soul: but he that strays injures his own soul. Nor art thou set over them to dispose of their affairs. (39/41)

PROPHETS' WAR WAGED AGAINST THE PROUD

"Go, thou and thy brother, with My Signs, and slacken not, either of you, in keeping Me in remembrance." Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, for he has indeed transgressed all bounds; "But speak to him mildly; perchance he may take warning or fear ((Allah))." (20/42-44)

Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our Signs and authority manifest, To Pharaoh and his Chiefs: But these behaved insolently: they were an arrogant people. (23/45-46)

And every time I have called to them, that Thou mightest forgive them, they have (only) thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance. (71-7)

Prophets waged war against the arrogant in their community. The arrogance veiled the truth for them.

HEARTS SEALED

…. Thus doth Allah, seal up every heart - of arrogant and obstinate Transgressors." (40/35)

Those who behave arrogantly on the earth in defiance of right - them will I turn away from My signs: Even if they see all the signs, they will not believe in them; and if they see the way of right conduct, they will not adopt it as the way; but if they see the way of error, that is the way they will adopt. For they have rejected our signs, and failed to take warning from them. (7/146)

The Qur'an claims that the hearts of the deniers, beliers, wrongdoers and transgressors will be sealed. This means that such individuals have the losers in this word; they can no longer see the truth, comprehend it when they see it before them. These are arrogant people for whom a terrible punishment has been prepared. On the Day of Judgment wilt thou see those who told lies against Allah.- their faces will be turned black; Is there not in Hell an abode for the Haughty? (39/60)

GOD DESPISES THE ARROGANT AND THE VAINGLORIOUS
