LOVE OF THE PROPHET

Now hath come unto you an Messenger from amongst yourselves: it grieves him that ye should perish: ardently anxious is he over you: to the Believers is he most kind and merciful (9/128)
The Prophet is closer to the Believers than their own selves … (33/6)

Holy Muhammad is a prophet sent to humanity as a mercy. He empathizes with the suffering of men, for he loves them dearly. He desires that they mend their ways. Towards the believers he is kinder and more compassionate. Clement and merciful are epithets that God uses for him. We have to love that great man full of clemency and mercy more than anything, including our own selves. Love felt for him is, in a sense, commensurate with divine.

Muhammad spent his life facing untold of tribulations; he had been the epitome of patience in many respects. He distributed all his belongings among the needy. “There must be at least one special wish of a prophet that is fulfilled by the Supreme Being. This wish, I will express on the Day of Reckoning, to intercede for my people.” This is how he expresses his wish to take his people under his protection.

Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of 'Imran above all people,- Offspring, one of the other … (3/33-34)

God programmed beforehand the person he was to assign as a prophet and endowed him with all the necessary characteristics that other human beings are deprived of. Having first created Adam and Eve, he sent them to the world to reproduce, and assigned as prophets, first Noah and then Abraham, Muhammad being his direct descendant. So had been Jesus, as a matter of fact, descending from the family of Imran. All these people had been duly appointed by God to serve His purpose.

Prophets are perfect men elected from among the public and endowed with characteristics that no other human being has. Yet, they are no deities, and are prone to commit errors. Their shortcomings are redressed by the Supreme Being. "It is true thou wilt not be able to guide every one, whom thou lovest; but Allah guides those whom He will and He knows best those who receive guidance". Kasas (28/56)

Muhammad, who is the last of the line of prophets, was the acme of perfection who had attained maturity by the grace of God and brought into a state so that through him the Qur'an might be revealed. "Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah". Ahzâb (33/21)

Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect. (33/56)

The blessings can be translated as follows: O God! Would that you had blessed Muhammad and His family! This formula is recited in every daily prayer by every Muslim. His sacred soul is always with us; it induces us to bless him and ask him to intercede for us.

And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (68/4)

Some disbelievers accused the Prophet of 'licence' for his plurality of mates. Muhammad was twenty-five years old when he married Khadija, his first wife, who was at the time forty years old. They had had a monogamous happy matrimonial life for twenty-five years. They had had six children, two of whom boys. When he lost her, he had been given the mission of spreading the Islam. Despite all sorts of tribulations he had to face, he had been steadfast in his resolution.

We sent thee not, but as a Mercy for all creatures. (21/107)

Mercy is God's chief attribute. …. My mercy extendeth to all things… A'raf (7/156) The messenger and the carrier of the last holy book to be revealed to humanity had been sent as a mercy to the entire universe. He was not sent to a particular community. "We have not sent thee but as a universal (Messenger) to men, giving them glad tidings, and warning them (against sin), but most men understand not". Sebe (34/28) God's mercy embraces not only humankind but also the beasts and the plants as well as all the creatures we are unaware of.

Say: "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (3/31)

To follow in the footsteps of the Prophet, to emulate his ways and follow his example will enable us to clear out path leading to heaven. To imitate him as the living Qur'an will contribute to our attaining our ultimate aim by the grace of God.

To love the Prophet, the most perfect man, is tantamount to loving the Supreme Being.
